KIDDIES AND COLLEGE

Illinois law now provides that if divorced parents have been ordered  to contribute to their child’s post-high school educational expenses that each parent and the child must sign any consents necessary for the educational institution to supply the parent with access to the child’s academic transcripts, records and grade reports.  The consents are not applicable to non-academic records.  Prior to this law being amended, it was the child’s responsibility to provide the parent with copies of his or her academic records.

The law, as amended, terminates a parent’s obligation when the child receives a baccalaureate degree.

Among the factors which a court may now consider in making an award is the child’s academic performance.

Ms. Thompson is also serving on a committee with local community leaders exploring the establishment of a visitation exchange center for Rock Island County.  The center will be a place where divorced and separated parents can safely drop off and pick up their children at the beginning and the end of visitation.  Guidelines are being developed as to when parents may be court-ordered into the program.
