Volume II - Issue No. 4 - Winter 1999 NEW YEAR-NEW LAWS The new year will bring with it new laws in Illinois. Here is but a sampling of laws which take effect on January 1, 2000. CHILD SUPPORT: Nine percent interest will be imposed on a child support obligation which remains unpaid for thirty days. (P.A. 91-397) CHILD SUPPORT: Recipients of child support can authorize the Child Support State Disbursement Unit to make automatic deposits of child support into the payee's bank account. For a copy of an authorization agreement, please contact our office. GANG TATTOOS: Juvenile court judges will be allowed to order the removal of gang tattoos. (P.A. 91-98) HOME REPAIR AND REMODELING ACT: Requires a person engaged in the business of home repair or remodeling to furnish the customer a written contract or work order with a copy of "Home Repair: Know Your Consumer Rights" before beginning any work greater than $1,000. It also requires the contractor to obtain insurance. (P.A. 91-230) STANDBY ADOPTION: The Spring 1999 issue of Legal Tidbits included an article on Standby Guardianships. Effective January 1st, a terminally ill parent may consent to custody and termination of parental rights to become effective upon either the death of the terminally ill parent or the request of the parent for the entry of a final judgment of adoption. A standby adoption is available for either a related or unrelated child. We must do something about the criticism and nasty jokes
